5 Art Basel Happenings to See and Be Seen At This Year

Art Basel Miami is filled to the brim with the cutting-edge contemporary art of the moment.

In its 14th edition, and under the new direction of Noah Horowitz, this year is set to draw in a multitude of top-shelf galleries and attract thousands of collectors and visitors to the tropical and glamorous shores of Miami Beach.

As the main fair unfolds beneath white billowing tents, the rest of the city soaks up the art world at secret spin-off events, offering plenty of opportunities to mingle with the international art elite.

1. Art on Paper
Launching this year on December 1st, the buzzed-about Art on Paper is one of Miami’s newest pop-up fairs. Hailing from New York City, the fair’s invite-only opening night will take place at the Deauville Beach Resort at the epicenter of the international art elite. Like its sister fair, Art on Paper Miami’s participating galleries will feature sculpture, drawing, painting, and photography, all unified by the medium of paper.

2. SoHo Beach House
Set inside a restored art deco building, this members-only club plays host to a number of exclusive art talks and pop-up galleries during the fair, while also offering an opportunity to unwind from the Basel bustle.

Relax with a cocktail made fresh at the 1940s Cuba-inspired bar and sample delicious Mexican bites from the rooftop taqueria, in between refreshing dips in the plunge pool.

3. X Contemporary
Debuting the first week of December, with a vernissage for VIPs only, brand-new satellite fair X Contemporary will present galleries focusing on the work of emerging and mid-career artists. The fair’s evocative title, ‘X’ representing an area of intersection, conveys a crossover between visual art and fashion and is sure to attract only the most seasoned fair-goers.

4. Miami Project
For the fourth year, Miami Project will join the exhibits and events of Art Basel, celebrating modern, contemporary art and artists on a scenic waterfront location on Collins Avenue. Featuring 60 of the top galleries from all over the globe, this can’t-miss event offers something for every art aficionado’s taste. This year’s event will occur from Dec. 1-6th. Complimentary shuttle service is available, running on 20-minute intervals from the Miami Beach Convention Center (where Art Basel Miami Beach is hosted) and Art on Paper Miami.

5. Alchemist Fashion Drive-Thru
Art and fashion often go hand in hand, with contemporary artists often releasing an array of limited-edition collaborations (think: hand-painted sneakers). In celebration of the art fair, South Beach luxury boutique Alchemist hosts collaborations with artists, musicians, designers and more, creating an innovative and very retro ‘Drive-Thru’ shopping experience for customers. Past collaborations include Pharrell x Moncler, Kenzo x Toilet Paper, Kitsuné, Chrome Hearts, and Thom Browne, to name a few.
